Jewelry Care

General Jewelry Care

Each piece of Ekocreashunz jewelry is hand-crafted with unique and rare components and requires delicate handling. We recommend avoiding moisture and should your item get wet, make sure to dry it off immediately. Gold-plated items and other metals can tarnish over time when exposed to chemicals, such as hair spray, perfume and lotions. It’s recommended to put your jewelry on last to minimize the contact with these chemicals.

Copper and Brass Jewelry

Unless requested, Ekocreashunz copper and brass jewelry is not sealed and may oxidize naturally over time. We use recycled metals and give each piece a thorough cleaning, with a high polish. Many of our customers like the natural patina that comes with oxidation. However, the high polish can be returned very easily with household products.

Brass can be cleaned with lemon juice, coarse salt and a toothbrush. Be sure to rinse the lemon juice off with water and dry with a soft cloth. If your piece has a gemstone on it, try not to submerge it into water. Use a damp cloth instead.

Copper can also be cleaned with lemon juice and salt on a soft cloth. Ketchup, yes ketchup, will clean copper as well. Simply, squirt it on, brush with a toothbrush and use a damp cloth to buff all of the ketchup out.

Sterling Silver and Gold-Filled

Sterling silver oxidizes quickly when exposed to the elements. However, gold-filled does not. The recipe below works on both metals. If your piece has a gemstone on it, please refrain from using this method and use a jewelry polishing cloth instead.

The ingredients needed to clean sterling silver and gold filled jewelry are: 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 table spoon dish detergent, 1 cup of water. Heat the water in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. Cut a piece of aluminum foil that roughly covers the bottom of a small bowl (like a cereal bowl). Pour hot water into bowl. Place salt, soda, and dishwashing liquid into bowl. Place jewelry on top of foil and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry jewelry completely with soft cloth. Discard solution after use and make a new batch next time.
